Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper

The Last Supper was the meal during which Christ announced
that one of the Twelve Apostles would betray him to the Romans
who would then crucify him. Leonardo da Vinci illustrated the
moment just after Christ makes this announcement when the 11
innocent apostles react with shock, incredulity, curiosity, suspicion
and sorrow, while Judas attempts to hide his shame and guilt
at having accepted a bribe from the Romans. The Last Supper is also when Christ established the sacrament
of the Eucharist by symbolically identifying his body and blood
with bread (the sacrifice) and wine (the remission of the sins
of man). |
