St. Peter

Back to The Last Supper

Just after Christ announced that one of the apostles will betray him, it is written in the bible that St. Peter beckoned to St. John the Baptist and asked 'who it should be of whom He spoke.' St. Peter is shown here leaning towards St. John the Baptist. He is also seated next to his brother St. Andrew and before them both is a plate of fish, in reference to their trade as fishermen. Though St. Peter, at this point in the story, is still unaware as to who the betrayer is, Leonardo da Vinci positioned his hand to hold a knife at Judas' back to subtly point to the backstabber.
